چکیده
Perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) are global, persistent, and toxic contaminants. We assessed PFAS concentrations in green (Chelonia mydas) hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) turtles from the North Pacific. Fifteen compounds were quantified via liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry 62 turtle 6 plasma samples Hawai’i, Palmyra Atoll, Northern Marianas Islands. Plasma 14 severely afflicted with fibropapillomatosis, eggs 12 Hawaiian nests 7 females analyzed. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) predominated plasma; perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) tissues. Concentrations greater than (p < 0.05), related to trophic differences. Green PFOS human populations highest lowest: Marianas, Palmyra. Influence on fibropapillomatosis was not evident. PFASs maternally transferred eggs, decreasing distance airports clutch order one female. A risk assessment of showed concern for immunosuppression Kailua alarming developmental toxicity. Perfluoroundecanoic (PFUnA) perfluorotridecanoic (PFTriA) levels correlated reduced emergence success 0.05). Studies further examine effects sea development would be beneficial.

The developmental biogeography of hawksbill sea turtles in the North Pacific
High seas oceanic ecosystems are considered important habitat for juvenile sea turtles, yet much remains cryptic about this important life-history period. Recent progress on climate and fishery impacts in these so-called lost years is promising, but the developmental biogeography of hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) has not been widely described in the Pacific Ocean. This knowledge...
متن کاملMulti-year tracking reveals extensive pelagic phase of juvenile loggerhead sea turtles in the North Pacific
BACKGROUND The juvenile stage of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) can last for decades. In the North Pacific Ocean, much is known about their seasonal movements in relation to pelagic habitat, yet understanding their multi-year, basin-scale movements has proven more difficult. Here, we categorize the large-scale movements of 231 turtles satellite tracked from 1997 to 2013 and explore th...

The spatial distributions and seasonal variations of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in surface waters were investigated for the German rivers Elbe and lower Weser, and the North Sea. ∑PFAS concentrations ranged from 4.1 to 250ngL(-1) in the River Elbe, from 3.8 to 16ngL(-1) in the lower Weser, and from 0.13 to 10ngL(-1) in the North Sea. The most abundant compound was perfluorobutanesulfonat...
متن کاملRadiosynthesis of Perfluoroalkyl Substances
Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widely utilized manmade chemicals. Their properties have made them highly appreciated in a variety of industrial and consumer product applications, including fire-fighting foams, hydraulic fluids, as well as in cookware and food contact papers. However, some of the PFASs are highly persistent in the environment and their toxicological profiles are of concer...
متن کاملAre levels of perfluoroalkyl substances in soil related to urbanization in rapidly developing coastal areas in North China?
Concentrations of 13 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were quantified in 79 surface soil samples from 17 coastal cities in three provinces and one municipality along the Bohai and Yellow Seas. The ∑PFASs concentrations ranged from less than limitation of quantification (LOQ) to 13.97 ng/g dry weight (dw), with a mean of 0.98 ng/g dw. The highest concentration was observed along the Xiaoqing Ri...
